Restaurant Pfefferschiff

Restaurant Pfefferschiff lies at the fringes of Salzburg, in the idyllic countryside. The fine-dining spot is hosted by chef Jürgen Vigné and his wife Iris. The restaurant itself is located in a striking baroque building, built over 300 years ago by Anton Kaufmann. Kaufmann owed his riches to the pepper trade. And that’s exactly what the name of the restaurant hints at, as “pfefferschiff” translates to “pepper ship”. Before the building became the restaurant as we know it, it functioned as a parsonage and a gathering spot for epicureans and gourmets. Luckily, its rich history isn’t erased and is still visible in the restaurant’s elegant furniture, the old tile stove in the dining rooms, and the unique outdoor dining area.

Pfefferschif’s cuisine

Being a keen fisherman, chef Jürgen Vigné has a passion for the golden trout and other sorts of prize fish. The chef’s signature dish is radicchio ravioli with black truffle. But especially his seasonally-influenced soup collection is extremely popular among Pfefferschiff’s diners. The wine list includes major labels from Austria, as well as an extensive selection of foreign wines. The latter vary from German Riesling to an extraordinary collection of French labels. It’s this excellent combination of the native and the foreign which makes Pfefferschiff’s wine list one of the most coveted in the Salzburg region. But there’s more: the restaurant’s wine cellar holds many rare gems. Think of exciting vintages, recent additions from collector stocks, and a variety of over 80 distilled spirits. Not to mention the remarkable collection of open wines.

Salzburg & surroundings

Right next to Pfefferschiff restaurant, you’ll find St. Anthony’s chapel. This belongs to the baroque Schloss Söllheim nearby and is a prominent location for christenings and marriages. Since the restaurant is located on the outskirts of the city, it’s also connected to Salzburg: a renowned festival city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll discover a range of cultural highlights that are worth a visit. When you follow the walking route from the restaurant, you’ll end up right at the heart of Salzburg in no more than two hours. If you’re looking for a hotel, we recommend Landgasthof Kirchbichl in Hallwang.
