Destination North-Holland, The Netherlands

The Netherlands is made up of twelve unique provinces, one of the most diverse being North Holland. This province stretches from the historic streets of Amsterdam to the windswept shores of Texel, bordered by the North Sea, Wadden Sea, and IJsselmeer. It is a place of rich traditions, where cheese markets, windmills, and fishing villages meet vibrant cities and endless tulip fields.

Cuisine in North-Holland

North-Holland is known for its cheese, especially Edam, Gouda and Beemster. It is also known for the ‘’Zaanse’’ mustard and ‘’Opperdoezer Ronde’’ potato. Because of the proximity to the North Sea you will find plenty of freshly caught fish. The ‘’Wadden’’ are full of surprising flavours such as oysters, mussels and clams. The island Texel is also situated in the province North-Holland. Typical food is of the island is Texels Lamb.

Sightseeing in North-Holland

This versatile province in the Netherlands offers all the typical Dutch icons. Visit the cheesemarket in Alkmaar and Edam, the fisherman village Volendam and the windmills on ‘’De Zaanse Schans’’. Because of the Northsea there are a lot of beautiful beaches in amongst others Zandvoort, Bergen aan Zee and Petten. Aalsmeer is home to the world’s biggest flower auction so you can find tulip field here as well.

Go mudflat waking on the bottom of the Unesco World Heritage site the Wadden Sea, during this walk you learn about the animals, plants, The Wadden Sea and how they had to adapt to the destructive tides of this Dutch sea.

The unique charm of North Holland

‘’De Kop van Noord-Holland’’ translated the head of North-Holland is the most authentic part of Holland. It has nice beaches, a versatile land and is surrounded by three totally different coasts; Noordzee, Waddenzee and Ijsselmeer. Which brings a lot of sun and salty seawind which you can taste in all the produce from that area.

Texel is the biggest island and is the most versatile of all the islands. It only has 7 villages and is only accessible by ferry from Den Helder.

Top Tourist Attractions in North-Holland

The most popular places of North-Holland are Amsterdam, Haarlem and Zandvoort. Amsterdam is our famous 17th century capital of the Netherlands. Where you can find historical builings and beautiful musea. Make a tour through the canals on a boat or make a walk in the ‘’Vondelpark’’. Close to the beach lies Haarlem with its many monumental buildings and gorgeous old squares. Stroll through the small streets and visit some of the special musea. It isn’t called the most Flemish city of the north for no reason. Zandvoort, also called ‘Parel aan zee’, pearl on the sea, has kilometers of long white beaches. It is also known for its Circuit for Formula 1 and is surrounded by beautiful dunes with rich flora and fauna.

Texel offers 140 km of biking trails where you can walk or (mountain)bike, 30 km of beaches for (kite)surfing or sailing, national park and nature museum Ecomare where you can find seals, sharks and rays.
